Château Haut-Brion:
Robert Parker: "An atypically high percentage of Merlot
(61%) in addition to 19% Cabernet Franc, and 20% Cabernet
Sauvignon make up the 2004 Haut-Brion. Fifty-five percent
of the production was utilized for the grand vin, a sur-
prisingly forward, charming, silky effort despite the
relatively high tannin. In fact, it reminded me of the
1985 even though those vintage conditions have nothing
in common with 2004 other than high yields. In any event,
the 2004 is a beautiful effort that is far superior to the
2002. Soft, gentle, and gracious, with a deep plum/ruby/purple
color, it offers up aromas of smoked herbs, sweet plums and
black cherries, and hints of mulberries as well as earth.
Medium-bodied, structured, pure, round, and seductive,
with a long finish, there is more here than meets the eye
and the palate."

Château Lascombes:
Robert Parker: "This property has exploded in quality
since it was acquired by the American company, Colony
Capital. Chateau Reignac’s Yves Vatelot was brought in
to oversee the winemaking, and everything was revolutionized
with the assistance of Dr. Alain Raynaud and Michel Rolland.
This has now become one of Margaux’s top wines, even
challenging Palmer and Chateau Margaux. The brilliant
2004 (50% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 10% Petit
Verdot) is unquestionably one of the wines of the vintage.
An inky/purple color is followed by a gorgeously expressive,
explosive nose of creme de cassis, smoked meats, flowers,
and graphite. Opulent, medium to full-bodied, and beautifully
concentrated, with tremendous precision as well as uplift,
this superb effort is atypically rich and textured for a 2004.

Rene Gabriel: "Sehr dunkles Rubin-Purpur, lila Schimmer.
Intensives Bouquet, komplex, Kirschen- und Brombeernoten,
darunter schöne, würzige Tiefe ausweisend. Im Gaumen er-
staunlich weich und samtig, viel Fülle und Fleisch, blau-
beerig bleibend, mit Rasse und Pfeffer im langen Finale,
eher zu maskuliner Charakteristik neigend, wird in seiner
Reife dem genialen 1990er sehr ähnlich sein."

Château Mouton-Rothschild:
Rene Gabriel: "(69 % Cabernet Sauvignon, 15 % Merlot,
13 % Cabernet Franc, 3 % Petit Verdot; 57 % der Gesamt-
produktion für den Grand Vin selektioniert): Extrem dunkles
Granat mit violett-schwarzen Reflexen. Ausladendes Brombeer-,
Cassis- und Schwarzschokobouquet, üppige und reife Frucht,
fast rahmig, sehr tief, Lakritze- und Spitzwegerichnote,
sogar ein Hauch frischer Sommertrüffel spürbar. Saftiger
Gaumen, tolle, schwarzbeerige Aromatik ausstrahlend,
Sojanoten, fein salzig im Extrakt, Teakholz, dunkles Mokka,
im Finale feine Schwarzschokobitterkeit zurückbleibend,
wie beim 1989er. Ein grosser Mouton mit viel Sex-Appeal,
im Moment aber (noch) hinter Latour und Lafite.

Château Pichon Baron:
Robert Parker: "One of the top Pauillacs of the vintage,
the 2004 Pichon Longueville Baron exhibits an opaque ruby/
purple color along with a big, rich nose of smoked meats,
licorice, blackberries, currants, and notions of tar and
truffles. The wine is medium to full-bodied with austere
tannin as well as abundant fruit, outstanding purity, and
a layered mid-palate. Although it can not be compared to
such prodigious Pichon Baron’s as 2000, 1990, or 1989, it
is a successful effort for the vintage.

Rene Gabriel: "(53 % Cabernet Sauvignon, 36 % Merlot,
7 % Petit Verdot, 4 % Cabernet Franc): Sehr tiefes Granat
mit violetten Reflexen. Tiefwürziges Bouquet, schwarze
Beeren, Tabak, Zedern, Cassis, Darjeelingteenote, ein Hauch
Minze, dicht, kompakt und tief, gewisse Cabernet-Trockenheit.
Im Gaumen viel Stoff, total schwarzbeerig, mit der gleichen
Konzentration wie in der Nase fortfahrend, sehr nobel in der
Tanninausrichtung, lang, mit Holunder- und Black-Currant-Noten
endend, spürbar im Finale die etwas kühle Aromatik gewisser
Cabernets und des Pressweins, schwarze Pfefferkörner im Finale.
Eine Art 1994er, was als grosses Kompliment gemeint ist."

Château Troplong Mondot:
Robert Parker: "Another terrific effort from charming
proprietress Christine Valette, the dense blue/purple-
hued 2004 Troplong Mondot displays a striking nose of
acacia flowers intermixed with crushed rocks, black
currants, cherries, blueberries, and raspberries. This
layered, structured, backward, but enormously well-endowed
2004 is a marvelous demonstration of how to produce an
elegant as well as substantially flavored wine. It will
need 2-3 years of cellaring, and should keep until 2020.
