bewertet:
I. La Porte du Ciel 2002
"This estate’s flagship offering is the 2002 La Porte du Ciel,
an amazing 100% Syrah cuvée (265 cases) made from yields of
[15 !!!] hectoliters per hectare, fermented in a small oak tank,
and given a 60-day maceration with Burgundy pigeage, malolactic
in barrel, aging on its lees, and no fining or filtration at
bottling. Previous vintages of this cuvée have been extra-
ordinary, and earlier vintages (i.e., 1998) are just beginning
to round into drinking shape. This full-bodied, inky/black/
purple-colored wine possesses a sweet nose of crème de cassis,
blackberries, melted licorice, truffles, and acacia flowers.
With a great texture, sumptuous mid-palate, and a huge,
impeccably pure, elegant finish, it is one of the handful
of truly prodigious dry red wines made in the Languedoc-
Roussillon. It should drink well for 15+ years."

II. Clos des Truffieres:
The special project of wine broker Jeffrey Davies, working
with consultant Claude Gros, from a 6-acre vineyard in the
hills above Beziers and Pezias, is the 2002 Clos des Truffières.
Made from 38-year old Syrah vines cropped at 15 hectoliters per
hectare, and like the Porte du Ciel, given a 60-day fermentation
and maceration, malolactic in barrel, aging on its lees, and
bottled unfined and unfiltered, this is an extraordinary
offering. The black/purple color is followed by aromas of
pen ink, graphite, crème de cassis, espresso roast, and white
flowers. Unctuously-textured, with low acidity, rich,
concentrated fruit, a multilayered texture, and a fabulous
finish, it is an amazing effort. Sadly, there are only 200
or so cases produced. It should drink well for 15+ years."
